Former Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan could be in line for a county season with Warwickshire in 2011. Younis will play for the county if his work permit application is approved and he is declared medically fit.
Younis was one of the Pakistani cricketers who was banned by the Pakistan Cricket Board. In his case the ban was for "inciting divisions" within the team. However, all the players who were banned or fined by the PCB appealed against the penalty and had it overturned, with the exception of Younis and Naved-ul-Hasan Rana. The PCB chairman has kept Younis out of the Pakistani side and the Pakistani Assembly has asked him to explain the reasons for the same.
Younis has been one of the better Pakistani batsmen with an average of more than 50 and was given the captaincy of the side. He had led his side to a World T20 victory in 2009 before a revolt by the Pakistani cricketers made him resign from the job.
Apart from Warwickshire, Younis has already played for Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Surrey.
Warwickshire director of cricket Ashley Giles said that the county was pleased to have been able to get Younis on board for the 2011 season.
"He is a great addition to the (Warwickshire) Bears' squad and will add tremendous depth to our batting line-up," he added.
Warwickshire already has a couple of international players to their disposal including Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott. While that can act as a great advantage, it is also a problem for the team given that they would remain away from the county during the international games.
If the Pakistan board refuse to select Younis in the Pakistani squad for the ICC World Cup next year, then he will be free to join the Warwickshire side for the pre-season preparations.
Apart from the English counties, Younis has also been a part of the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League and has played for South Australia as well.
